Lawrence "The Weiner" Weiner

Filed under: Kara Walker, Lawrence Weiner, Molly Nesbit — sebastian @ 5:31 pm

Really cool show at the Whitney, which incidentally is free on Saturdays. If you don’t believe me, here are some photos !

P.s. Beware, because I almost ran int0 one Molly Nesbit!!! Luckily David saw her first, warned me, then subsequently beckoned me to towards the stairwell when her back was turned, waiving his arms in fast wide circles like I was a thoroughbred coming around the final stretch.

Inadvertently keeping with the simile, we proceeded to furtively feed lumps of sugar to one another, building the strength and energy necessary to make a solid run at the Kara Walker one floor below.

2 interesting shows and whole lotta creepy later…

The three photos below (the orange instillation) are by Do Ho Suh at Lehmann Maupin Gallery on 26th street. There were some other cool things in this show, but the gallery attendant was grilling me so I didn’t take photos. Go see them for yourselves perhaps, you philistines.

pressures of being too popular.

These foam guys are by a dutch artist named Folkert de Jong. His show is called Les Saltimbanques and is at James Cohan Gallery, also on 26th.

Now just some flicks from the night

Even though they forgot to replace the “s” with a “z”, I’m still pretty sure whoever did this “Street Art” is da bomb.

what your daughter will look like if you don’t go see all the recent Darfur documentaries

taking color coordination even further than all the Broadway Pharrells put together, Al has managed to match the cadmium red of her ski mask to that of the fiendish glint in her eyes. How dastardly.

Martin Puryear

Filed under: Martin Puryear, art, culture — sebastian @ 1:46 am

Don’t miss this show. Most of the work is breathtaking in its beauty and craftsmanship. Here is the opening quote, which I think is really smart and insightful.

I value the referential quality of art, the fact that a work can allude to things or states of being without in any way representing them. The ideas that give rise to a work can be quite diffuse, so I would describe my usual working process as a kind of distillation- trying to make coherence out of things that can seem contradictory. But coherence is not the same thing as resolution. The most interesting art for me retains a flickering quality, where opposed ideas can be held in tense coexistence.
-Martin Puryear 2007

Here are some photos of the works on the main veranda, just to give you a vague sense of what you are in for.

see how this guy is looking up?

report from new hammie

Filed under: boat shoes, butt plug, new england, podcast, radio — zach @ 10:34 pm

i am in new hampshire right now and i can breath! i want to do insane things like hike the appalachian trail and bathe exclusively in patchouli and other essential oils. this morning i joined my good friend andrew on WUNH 91.3fm in durham. it would have been more organized as far as my contributions went, but he invited me after i packed my bags and left so i didn’t get to bring sweet things to play. i had my computer however but no one had any blank cd’s for me to use and we couldn’t quite figure out how to jimmy rig it all up to work. so, it was a little hectic, but pretty good all in all. anyway, the reason that i am spending so much time talking about this is because it’s available online if you want to listen to it. it’s pretty much like a podcast except with no swear words allowed and lots of psa’s. anyway, check this out: WUNH – Tuesday 9/6/2007 6AM-9AM.

oh yeah, one important note is that we were 15 minutes late because we couldn’t get into the building. so, you’re gonna wanna go ahead and skip 15 minutes into the broadcast. and i’m assuming this link will be pretty permanent for a while, but i may need to figure out another way of keeping the link working. we’ll see! you’ll know you have the right podcast if it starts with a rad usaisamonster song off their new cd.

i wish i had sweet pictures to post to spice things up a little like sebastian’s posts. instead, i would just like to recommend apple pie and extra sharp cheddar cheese for dessert. i’m told it’s a new england thing. i think it’s a great thing!

my mom gave me a flu shot which is great. that reminds me, get your flu shots people.

Couples

NYC is getting cold, and its inhabitants are pairing off to share the warmth. Some of the cute guys below recall the timeless classics; Disney’s Fox and Hound, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Claire Danes, or Tom Cruise and the blond lady in Cocktail, to name a few, while still others are more reminiscent of a hibernating bear and his poopy butt plug.
